Curriculum

TLE COURSE OFFERING

TLE Christian Academy's courses reflect a highly academic, classical education placed upon a solidly Biblical foundation. We provide award winning curriculum for each core subject.

Foreign Language:
Latin is our first language due to its versatile applicability as both a foundation for multiple foreign languages, and its link to English vocabulary and grammar. Students not yet ready to study Latin or students entering TLE in the midst of a semester are instructed in English grammar and syntax.

As a second language we offer courses in Spanish, French, or Japanese. Here the emphasis is to teach the students to speak or write in the language, for what good is it to learn a living language if you cannot use it. Additional fees apply for these courses.

Math:

TLE can accommodate all necessary math courses. We teach Algebra I, II and III and Plane Geometry, Trigonometry alternate years.  Statistics and Calculus are also available on an independent study basis.  Students with a strong Math background and with interest and ability to teach will be offered to work as Teaching Assistant for the younger students.

Students not ready for higher level math courses will build a strong Math foundation with a combination of curriculum like Ray's Arithmetic, Fingermath et.al.

Social Studies:
This course uses the most highly endorsed curriculum of its kind: The Life in America series. The students are taken on a journey through the times, giving them a solid understanding of the people and events that created history. The steps go beyond just history, but it is a truly social studies curriculum, integrating history, geography, English, practical art, bible, and science. This is the hour and a half where all TLE students get together exchanging ideas and work in teams. Ellen uses various techniques to engage students in the material including brainstorming and discussion, multimedia presentations, small group assignments, games, and student presentations to take the students from curiosity to mastery.

Teaching Assistant:
High school students with maturity, and mastery of a certain subject matter are encouraged to work with us as Teaching Assistants. This is the ultimate way to get a deep understanding of the subject matter while gaining a perspective on how others learn and are motivate. The TAs are getting individual coaching from us in their subject matter. The training also include a general leadership training. Apart from getting deductions of their tuition they also gain valuable high school credits for their work.

Writer's Workshop:
At TLE Christian Academy there is a strong emphasis on speaking and writing skills. We use a College Writing course for grammar and composition.  Students work in small groups with their writing assignments as well as get individualized coaching to perfect skills including spelling/vocabulary and incorporating in the writing and structuring of a play. High school students are required every year to complete ten different writing assignments. One very popular assignment is the annual project to create their own screen play. The script outline will be ready in the fall and for those interested and pass the audition test (most interested do) they will be part of the annual fundraiser dinner movie at the end of the school year.

English Composition

Students just beginning the writing adventure have their own English course.  It is art based and focuses on mechanics and creativity.

Classic Literature
The evidence is overwhelming - students who read get a higher SAT and will have an academic advantage when leaving school. We like that. So we require our students to read classic literature - goal is one book a month. This is done individually and they are required hand in chapter summaries and book report that are graded and discussed with each student.

Reading and Rhetoric

If a student cannot read well aloud - he or she cannot read well.  At TLE we utilize the McGuffey Readers from the 1800s.  These eclectic readers provide a firm foundation for phonetics and oratory.

Business Class

One of the two parallel  tracks offered on Friday's is a business class.  Each year we will focus on a special area within the subject of Business Management such as Starting a Company;  Marketing;  Management etc.  In general the mornings are spent acquiring theoretical knowledge while the afternoon is spent solving specific business problems.  The class includes numerous visiting professionals and on-site visits to businesses

Creative Classes

Under the experienced leadership of Gaylen Brainard, we offer various creative courses including art history, drawing, painting, photography, 3-dimensional Design.  We are honored to once again have Gaylen teach our students.  Fine arts teaching cannot be better than this.  See for yourself on the annual exhibit.  For more information on Gaylen Brainard please display
