Karen Armstrong, Teacher

Karen Armstrong is a teacher who gets incredible joy in seeing the difference made as students gain new insights, become more interested in a subject and learn more about themselves. She is attracted to education by its sense of service, because she wants to make a clear tangible difference in the lives of others.

Karen has also been given the opportunity to advise middle and high school students here at TLE. Since she views advising as a teaching and learning experience, she encourages each student to be actively engaged in setting their own educational goals. Her goal throughout this advising experience is for students to gain a self-awareness that will inform their decisions about academic, career and life goals.

Giving honor to God who is truly the head of her life, she and her family were placed at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Powder Springs, GA approximately 7 years ago. Although she knew the importance of serving, she had difficulty choosing a ministry that “fit”. She stumbled upon the possibility of leading a Girl Scout troop and with her Pastor’s permission, was allowed to bring the troop to her church and the possibility of leading a troop became a reality. She also serves as a Deaconess and participates in their Praise Dance Ministry.

Karen holds an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and a Master of Science in Higher Education. Her business degree allowed her to develop her ability to communicate effectively and direct others; She is comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility. She believes that understanding Psychology can help her recognize issues that may require additional help if her student is to perform well academically. It also helps her to recognize differences in motivation, and best ways to deal with each individual student. Her education degree, prepared her for what she does every day, which is trying to make a difference in the lives of the student’s here at TLE Christian Academy.

Elizabeth Bauer, Para-Professional

Elizabeth is working on a degree in Early Childhood Education at Georgia Highlands College and has plans on transferring to KSU to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Dawn Doty, Dyslexia Therapist

Dawn Doty is passionate about teaching struggling readers to overcome their reading obstacles! She lived in New Mexico for the past 35 years. Dawn and her husband, Fred, raised their 5 children in the mountains outside Albuquerque. She was one of the original staff members at Calvary Christian Academy and continued there 21 years until relocating to Georgia.

Dawn taught kindergarten, junior high and high school English, 5th grade, and was an assistant principal for 50 kindergarten students during her teaching years there.

During her 5th grade teaching years, Dawn noticed that so many students were still struggling with reading and extra time with a tutor did not remedy the problem. This stirred her to find a way to help these students. As a result, Dawn went back to school at The Multisensory Language Training Institute of New Mexico. The training is an Orton Gillingham based program developed to remediate the severe dyslexic student.

Dawn is now a certified "Dyslexia Therapist" and also certified by the International Dyslexia Association. She has spent the last few years teaching students using the methods developed by The Multisensory Language Training Institute.
